Evangelical Church Members Given History of Church
On Sunday evening the congregation of Zion Evangelical church had the pleasure of listening to a review of the history of the church for the past 60 years. The story was given by Mr. Charles Wagenblass, a trustee of the church. Following is the synopsis of the paper:
Tribute was paid to the pioneers of the Evangelical church who have passed on and special tribute paid to the two remaining pioneers in the persons of Mrs. August Heise and Mrs. August Boese who are well past the four score years and still attend service.
Dating back to 1880 some of the old pioneers feeling the need of a church in Arnprior visited Sebastopol and the preacher in charge in the person of Rev. Heist who paid a visit to Arnprior and made a start by holding services in the old brick school in Division Street for a time.
- 1881-Rev. L. Wittick made special trips to Arnprior and a good start was made.
- 1882-Rev. S. C. Greab was stationed here and held meetings in a frame building on Albert Street. A church was purchased where now stands the present church.
- 1885-During the pastorate of Rev. J. C. Morlock the property was paid for Rev. Morlock living on Elgin Street, in the now Cunnigham block, Rev. Morlock died in 1932.
- 1886-Rev. S. N. Moyer was stationed at Arnprior and died in 1893.
- 1887-Rev. F. Meyer served the charge for three years, Mrs. Meyer died in Arnprior in 1890. Rev. Meyer is still living a retired preacher’s life.
- 1890-Rev. H. G. G. Schmidt served for one year, and passed away in 1920.
- 1891-Rev. G. N. Graff was sent to the charge and died in 1912.
- 1894-Rev. Samuel Krupp served the field. Died in 1928.
- 1895-Rev. Jacob Wileham was stationed here.
- 1899-Rev. C. Bolender served for about four years and later died in 1909.
- 1904-Rev. E. M. Gischler served the field and paid a visit to Arnprior in the summer of 1940. Is now living a retired life.
- 1905-Rev. O. G. Hallman was stationed and plans were started for the erection of a new church. In 1908 the present brick church was built and paid for.
- 1910-A grand old man was stationed in the person of Rev. E. Eby and passed on to a better home the same year. Rev. H. G. G. Schmidt finished the conference year.
- 1911-Rev. Kreh, an elderly man was stationed and the same year Mrs. Hreh died in Arnprior. Rev. Kreh died in 1918.
- 1912-Rev. Jacob Dommn served the charge for one year.
- 1913-1920-showed progress through the pastorate of Rev. L. Wittick who was an able speaker. He was well known in Arnprior by many. A new brick addition was added to the parsonage and a new furnace installed in the church.
- 1920-1926-showed further progress and Arnprior was at its peak during the pastorate of Rev. E. Burn who was well known and possessed a most wonderful memory and was a real singer. Swiss yodels were often rendered and enjoyed. Rev. Burn is still a power for good.
- 1926-1928-Rev. W. O. Hayne came to Arnprior and served the field in an excellent manner for two years. Rev. Hayne visited Arnprior last summer.
- 1928-1932 Rev. A. F. Stoltz was stationed. Rev and Mrs. Stoltz who were missionaries from Africa served the field well. The church edifice was re-decorated and new lights were installed. Rev. Stoltz passed away in 1940.
- 1932-Rev. E. D. Becker was sent to Arnprior who preached the Word of God in all earnestness but here his work finished and he passed away in Arnprior in 1933. Rev. O. G. Hallman finished the conference year.
- 1934-Rev. N. E. Dahms was stationed here who served the field well for five years. Mrs. Dahms passed away while here in Arnprior.
- 1939-A young preacher in the person of Rev. F. Paul Erb served the charge. He also possessed some fin qualities.
- And last but not least in 1940-Rev. W. H. Campbell came to Arnprior and he can speak for himself as yet; one way of finding out is to attend his services when ever opportunity comes your way.
